What is hydraulic cylinder

A hydraulic cylinder is a mechanical actuator used to apply unidirectional force by unidirectional stroke. It is the most commonly used product that has its traces almost everywhere around us. It is a linear actuator that creates a mechanical force in a straight line through pushing or pulling. The basic components of the hydraulic cylinder consist of a tube, piston, ram, two end caps, and suitable oil seals. 

It is one of the major components of the hydraulic system; this system involves using pressurized fluid to power the engine. The hydraulic cylinder helps to move the energy from a motor to an actuator. It helps to convert the hydraulic energy to mechanical movement.

The operating specifications for hydraulic cylinders include stroke, bore diameter, rod diameter, maximum operating pressure, and cylinder type. Stroke is the distance that piston travels through in and out movement. The maximum working pressure a cylinder can sustain is known as the maximum operating pressure. The bore diameter is the diameter at the cylinder bore; rod diameter is the diameter of the piston used in the cylinder. 

Types of Hydraulic cylinder

There are various types of hydraulic cylinders available in the market; we will list down all of them below. 

1) Single-acting cylinders

These cylinders operate in a single direction; the piston rod extends when the fluid is pumped into the cylinder barrel. The external force is required in this cylinder to complete the return operation; later applying the energy helps to drain the fluid from the barrel to the reservoir. The best example of a single-acting cylinder is the hydraulic jack. Spring extend & spring return is the further classification of the single-acting cylinders; these are used to hold the workpieces together. 

2) Double-acting cylinder

This type of cylinder consists of the head and rod ends with ports for pumping the liquid. These ports provide the movement as they have control of the fluid. Pumping hydraulic fluid to the rod end will retract the piston rod & pumping fluid to the head end will extend the piston rod.

3) Tie-Rod Cylinder

Tie-rod cylinder is widely used for industrial and manufacturing applications. It has numerous advantages like low maintenance, repair, and assembling. Threaded steel rods are used to hold the tie-rod cylinders. 

4) Welded Rod Cylinders

The cylinders where ends caps are directly welded on the barrel are known as welded rod cylinders. The compact design makes them suitable for mobile applications. 

5) Telescopic Cylinder

This type of cylinder consists of various cylinders built inside one another. This is a unique cylinder that is a combination of single-acting staged with the double-acting stage as well. 

6) Plunger Cylinder

A cylinder without the piston or with the piston with the seal is called a plunger cylinder. This cylinder is used for pushing; the maximum is of the piston rod is multiplied by the pressure. 

7) Differential Cylinder

Similar to any other cylinder used for pulling this one is also used for the same purpose. The only difference that occurs during pushing is where the piston rod of the cylinder does not return to the reservoir but goes to the bottom of the cylinder resulting in much faster movements. 

This cylinder has only one piston rod on the piston surface. It also has two large surfaces; the first one is on the extremely effective piston side, the other is on the rod side that is effective only on the ring surface. 

8) Position Sensing Smart Cylinder

The hollow rods are not required in this type of cylinder; they have external hall effect technology that automatically senses the position of the cylinder. The reason behind this effect is the magnet that’s present inside the piston rod.
